Why I’m proud to be judging the National Business Motoring Awards
I'm delighted to be joining the judging panel for the National Business Motoring Awards (NBMA) this November.
The awards celebrate some of the very best businesses and individuals across the automotive sector, recognising those who go above and beyond to deliver outstanding results, exceptional service and meaningful impact. As someone who has spent many years working within and alongside the automotive industry, I know just how much talent, dedication and innovation exists across our sector, and I'm looking forward to seeing the entries.
What does excellence mean?
The word "excellence" is used frequently in business, but what does it truly mean in an automotive context? For me, automotive excellence starts and ends with the customer.
The organisations that consistently stand out are those that make it easy for customers to trust them. They understand that every interaction matters, whether that's a routine service, vehicle purchase, repair or aftersales enquiry. Great businesses don't just solve problems. They create positive experiences that build confidence, loyalty and lasting relationships.
However, exceptional customer experience doesn't happen by accident. It is the result of an engaged and committed team working towards a shared purpose.
The businesses I most admire are those where every employee understands the role they play in serving customers. When people feel valued, empowered and connected to the organisation's goals, they are more likely to deliver the high standards customers expect. Strong cultures create strong customer outcomes, and the best automotive businesses recognise that investing in their people is every bit as important as investing in technology, facilities or processes.
A third hallmark of excellence is how organisations respond when things don't go to plan.
No business is immune from challenges, but the difference lies in the response. Customers value honesty, speed and clear communication. The ability to address issues quickly, accurately and transparently can turn a potentially negative experience into an opportunity to strengthen trust. In my view, excellence is often demonstrated most clearly during these moments.
Why is it important for the IMI to champion excellence?
These principles closely align with the IMI's commitment to raising standards and promoting professionalism across the motor industry. The IMI's vision is to elevate the motor industry workforce into a globally admired profession that inspires trust in every community and fosters sustainable innovation, while our mission is to be the gold standard for the motor industry workforce through trusted advocacy, world-class education and enduring partnerships.
At the heart of the IMI's strategy is a belief that trust, professionalism and excellence are fundamental to the future success of our industry. We champion the people and businesses that continually strive for high standards and quality in everything they do, because these are the organisations that strengthen confidence in automotive and help drive the sector forward.
That's why I'm so pleased to be supporting the NBMA Awards as a judge. I look forward to celebrating the businesses and individuals who are setting the benchmark for excellence and showcasing the very best of what our industry has to offer.
I can't wait to see the entries.
